The End…

(Source: Athingsd  2012)

In this course on Introduction to Publication and Design, I have learned a lot on the theories of design and the appropriate ways to approach target audience. The course allows me to understand that image can be as meaningful as text and the combination of both may have different interpretation result.

As one of the assignment for this course, I have learned to do blog posting and the classification of blogs. Before this, I never think that blogs can be classified in to so many categories. Besides that, I also learned blog creditability. Other than blog, another assignment provides me the actual experience on design and produce of print document like fact-sheet and magazine article. The assignment also exposes us to the Vlog.

Overall, not theories I have learned in this course. As a designer or blogger we must be integrity and ethical while providing information to our audiences.

Copyright!

I believe that plagiarism is a common word which often being link to the copyright. From my understanding, plagiarism is the stealing of other people ideas and using as it like our own ideas without acknowledges to the owner. In this internet advancement world, getting ideas of information is quick and easy job. For me as a student, this advancement allows me to gather information and idea to help me along my study life. Google scholar and online library are often used by me for information search on books or journals. However, citations are a must whenever we use others author to support our own idea.

Before e-books are gaining their place in the media, print book has already faced copyright problem as people purchase photocopy books which are less costly compare to the original. With internet, plagiarism becomes even easier where things are presented in soft copy.

Google VS Copyright
(Source:  Aoi 2012)

In the article of ‘Google reaches Library Project settlement in court case with publishers’ by Harris 4 October 2012, Google has come to an end for the settlement on copyright. What happen is, Google copy all online library source from university online library for their Google Library Project. By doing this, Google are providing wide range of free online source to their user. This leads to publisher protest that the act had violate their copyright and affect their business model. The settlement outcome is that Google only allow 20% for online viewing and provide purchasing channel for used to buy the complete book.

According to Miller (2012), copyright is a law to control the plagiarizing creator work. In my opinion in this case, it is good that Google and the publisher comes to a settlement and Google continue their Library Project. This allows people to search information and seek knowledge, especially the poor ones which can’t afford collage and extra spending. It is not an easy work for an author to write a book or journal article. Therefore, in my opinion, we must be thankful for their hard work, respecting them by buying originals and citation to their ideas.

Halt over Anti-Islam Films on YouTube?

Innocent of Muslim Films on YouTube
(Source:  Seruu.com 2012)

In the article of ‘Pakistan’s PM order YouTube halt over anti-Islam film’ by Reuters 17 September 2012, YouTube is being order to stop anti-Islam films by the prime minister of Pakistan after a video was made which is taken to be not respecting to the Prophet Mohammad. This incident has anger the Islamic world which lead to some of the believer reacted violently. Viewer of the video felt that the video are offensive to Islam.

After the incident of 911 attacks, prejudice and inequality often falls onto Muslims. Islam is being assumed as a violent religion. This has brought up the issue of racist and stereotype. Racism are define in two ways by Nittle (2011) which is assume of different race will have different characteristic and one is more superior to another. The other definition will be the discrimination and prejudice based on race.

In my opinion on the issue, I think that we should not have prejudice and discrimination towards Islam believer as violent act are against Islamic or most religious rules. We should not have prejudice towards Muslims just because minority of then acted violently. For example, Muslims have violent Muslim and peaceful Muslim. Same goes to Christian to have violent and peaceful ones.

On another point of view, freedom of speech is everyone privileges. On the peaceful Muslim angle, they voice out their feelings through Vlog or Facebook page to perform their dissatisfied.  However, although cultural differences and religious value may have different extent on freedom of speech, I think that a film which contain insulting content are not appropriate use of freedom of speech. It is morality wrong to insult people.

On factors for government censorship, every country has different cultural, religious value and political leader. In my opinion, due to the background differences, government has rights to censor or ban things which are not respecting and harm human rights.

As conclusion, we should respect each other’s without mark of nationality, race, gender and so.

The Screen VS The Print!! E-book Evolution..

Follow the steps of technology advancement, electronic device had become so advance that people can go online seek for information whenever they want. This technological breakthrough allows people to receive information faster, safe time, and some says to be more environmental friendly.  One of the outcomes of this breakthrough is the evolution of e-books. In the article of ‘The e-book evolution’ by Oon on Oon Yeoh new media guy 4 July 2012 states that in USA, the sales of e-books have overtake the sales for print books. This reflects that the people are adopting technology change on the use of internet.

Although e-books are very popular in USA, it did not make it in Malaysia. In Malaysia, the use of e-books is still not widely adopted yet, print book still stay on top. The willingness to adopt technology change on the use of internet is one the reason for print books to stay in market. According to Penman (1998), printed document with large font are more preferable by older people. One of the reasons is that older people might not adopt technology change on the use of internet. Besides that, the large font size making the document easier for older people to read. In my opinion, is will be easier and comfortable for older people to read from print document rather than using computer or small electronic device.

On other hand, Penman (1998) also mentions that pocket size books are more preferable by younger people for easy carry. Therefore, the invention of Kindle or Ipad perfectly match younger generation needs and wants. As younger generation nowadays likes to spend time on the internet, e-books are the better option for convenience. In my opinion, e-book is more suitable for younger generation due to their knowledge on internet use and better eye sight to operate small device.

As conclusion, I think that both e-books and print books have their own target audience.
